What is a good beginner guitar?

Well i am thinking of getting a guitar for christmas. I really like rock music and i would also like to play a little jazz too. What is a good beginner guitar? Something not too expensive but good quality.

For a beginner’s guitar, I always suggest getting a Used Guitar. You can buy a good quality used guitar for about the same price as a lower quality new guitar. More bang for your buck. It is not easy to learn to play guitar. Trying to learn on a poor quality guitar makes the task more difficult.

A Strat is a good guitar for rock. Others have bashed the Squier Strat (made by Fender). I think it is a pretty good guitar. Over the past 45 years, I have owned a lot of different guitars and played on even more. The Squier Strat is not a bad instrument.

However, I do not like the Strat for jazz, the single coils pickups give you that classic rock sound, but are not warm and mellow enough for jazz. My favorite guitar for jazz has always been the Gibson ES-335. It has a great sound for jazz. That particular instrument is priced beyond a beginner guitar. Epiphone Dot is a cheaper version of the 335. It is good for jazz, but I never liked it for rock.

If you want one guitar that will handle both genres fairly well, take a look at the Les Paul. Epiphone (made by Gibson) makes several Les Paul style guitars. If you can afford an Epiphone Les Paul Studio, you would be very happy with that. You can probably find a good used one on eBay.
