Why does my Peavey bass amp pop?
I purchased a used Peavey TKO 115 bass amp about 3 months ago from Guitar Center (luckily I also purchased the Pro Coverage Repair plan). About a month ago I noticed a distorted sound and popping when I played the A string open and up to the 7th fret. Of course, my first thought was the bass itself, but I tried another bass and experienced the same problem. Is it possible for the speaker to be busted in such a way that it is only affected by a particular frequency? Any thoughts?
It’s possible that certain notes will cause a resonance that will rattle certain things at certain times in an amp. It’s also possible that a component in the signal chain has gone out.
I’d take the amp and your bass back to GC and let them hear it. They should swap your amp out for you.
