Strat Pots
Can I put humbuckers in a strat without getting new pots or a Pickup Selector?
I put together a strat with parts off of eBay and don’t like the sound of the single coils that are in it now. I was recently at guitar center and found a set of Seymour duncans that I want to put in. If I just undid the wiring from the bridge and neck pickups and hooked up the Seymours then would I have any wiring issues?
Hi! If you are referring to “stacked” humbuckers, then it is just a matter of making the same connections on the pickup selector switch and signal ground as the single-coils; plus, you can get by with using your existing 250K potentiometers. For the “traditional” side-by-side humbuckers, you will need to swap out the pickguard, and should switch the pots to the recommended 500K value for full-range performance. The manufacturer instructions at http://www.seymourduncan.com/products/electric/ are pretty explicit, making the job relatively foolproof. Just select your pickup, click on the “wiring instructions” tab, and all the details are nicely presented.
