Sealed Type
Can a bike that uses an unsealed bottom bracket use the sealed type bottom brackets?
The mountain bike I’m currently working on uses the 3 piece crank and the bottom bracket is the unsealed type. I have had to replace the bearings and their cages with new ones since they were running free inside the Bike frame. The condition of the crank spindle is that one side seems to be bent or twisted because both crank arms have square holes and one of the arms does not go all the way in. Can they use the sealed types.
Um, there may be one of several things going on and a new bottom bracket MIGHT not help. This is a bit of a long answer but I try to educate as I answer this type of question.
When a crank arm doesn’t fit on the spindle it is usually a problem with the crank arm especially if it is steel rather than alloy. Since steel doesn’t ‘give’ it is less likely that the arm can make good contact with the spindle taper. If the tolerance of the arm is even a tiny bit off- call it less than one-thousandth of an inch- actually MUCH less than that the arm will not fit well.
Machining on a bottom bracket spindle is almost never a problem while the broach (square hole) in the arm is frequently out of tolerance on lower grade cranks. If this is the case then a new bottom bracket will not help, and unless you have some really good measuring calipers and know how to use them it will be impossible to check this.
The arm should go on about 80% of the way by hand, then tightening to correct torque should seat it in to the correct depth. If this occurs, you are fine.
If you have tried the arms on a different spindle and they fit OK then you do need a new bottom bracket. If this is the case you can absolutely get a sealed unit- just make sure the threading and spindle length are the same as the old one.
