What qualities make a good soft guitar case?
I want to get my boyfriend a Soft Case for his guitar, but I don’t know anything about them… All I know is that he was looking for one so he can take his guitar with him when he has to travel and he wants one with back-pack straps. Also, he has an acoustic guitar if that makes any difference.
I’ve never been a fan of soft guitar cases (or “gig bags” as they are sometimes referred as). But then again, the crews that have worked with me are one step this side of the gorillas in the old Samsonite luggage commercials (search on YouTube to see what I mean).
There’s no real difference in the designs…they’re all pretty much the same. What you want is a good amount of padding, well sewn seams, and a zipper that’s not going to jam up the second time you use it.
It I was going to buy one, I’d probably look at Gator brand. I’ve got a pedal board bag from them that’s put together very well.
Another company that’s kind of got a buzz going is Road Runner cases. They have what they call their Polyfoam acoustic guitar case that claims to have the protection of a hardshell case with the weight of a gig bag. If that’s true, I’d consider it for going to open mics locally! At $60, the price is right.
Guitar Center should carry both of these.
The important thing is making sure that the guitar fits correctly, so you’ll need to take it to the store to try it out.
