Any suggestions for small cabin rental within 2 hours of Vancouver?
I want to move to a small island or town outside of Vancouver, with public transit/ferry/water taxi access and walking distance of less than 15 minutes. I am looking for seclusion but safety and need wireless internet, cable tv not required. I work from home and would need to go into Vancouver once a month. Any suggestions on where to look? Some have suggested Gambier Island, Gibsons, White Rock so any comments on those places would be appreciated.
They’re all nice places. There’s also Bowen Island, which is quite accessible because you can take the ferry to Horseshoe Bay(25 minutes), then a bus into Vancouver. Bowen has a bus though the schedule is a bit limited. Rentals can be hard to find and won’t be particularly cheap but they are out there. There’s a very lively internet forum which you can find by googling “Bowen online” There are classified ads there. Ridiculously safe on Bowen.
Gambier Island means you have to go to Langdale near Gibson’s to get the ferry to Vancouver. And you’ll have to go to Gibson’s for almost all shopping. There’s practically nothing there.
If you only need to get into town once a month, almost any of the islands with ferry or water taxi service would work for you. Gabriola near Nanaimo, Galiano, Saltspring, Mayne, Pender, there are lots of them. Some have more services than others.
Gabriola might be worth a look. Its ferry drops you right in downtown Nanaimo and not too far from the ferry to Horseshoe Bay. And house prices aren’t as outrageous as they are in many places.
A problem with finding accommodation on many of these islands is that sometimes it’s seasonal. People have places but only use them in summer. That’s fine until June comes along and you have to move and every place is in use for the summer. And prices have climbed very steeply on most of those islands lately. People who bought a place in the last 5 or 10 years paid big bucks for it.
You’d be extremely lucky to find a modest cabin in White Rock, or indeed anywhere in the Lower Mainland. Real estate prices are so high that very few little old places remain and their rents aren’t cheap any more. Not saying they’re not out there, but they’ll be very hard to find.
