can i use a dpdt switch as a quad in dual out switch?
i wanted to use a dpdt on-off-on to switch between 2 different inputs from 2 different guitar jacks. can i go positive-1 neg-2 from one input and pos-3 neg-4 from the other then send “A” to the + on an amplifier and “B” to the – on the same amp?
No. This cannot be done. A DPDT switch (with a center off)
is only good for selecting two different loads or power sources
and the reversing of polarity. What I think that you want to do
can be performed by a simple mixing box, where you can ‘pan’
from one guitar to another. Try a 2 gang 5 K Ohm (5,000 Ohm)
Linear Taper potentiometer (variable resistor). View this assembly
with the terminals facing you, but slightly pointing down. On the
top portion of the ‘pot’, tie the left side to the ‘A’ input and the
right side to ground. The center terminal is the ‘wiper’ and ‘picks
off’ the desired amplitude to be sent to the amp. Connect the
bottom portion of the pot, but this time, the left side to ground
and the right to the ‘B’ input. Place 2 (two) 680 Ohm 1/4 watt
resistors in series. Connect one end to wiper arm A and the
other end to wiper arm B. The center of this will connect to the
positive of the input of your amp, and all the grounds tie together
(common ground). You just want to control the level of each at
a touch of one control, right? This should do it. There will be a
small signal loss due to all of the resistance involved. Adjusting
the ‘balance’ of your new control will give you both inputs at the
middle position. If you want to go to just A to B in a flash, you
can use a SPDT switch…just tie all of the grounds together
(common) and feed the center of the switch to the amplifire’s
input positive (hot).
