Chrome Tuneomatic

Hands sweat too much as I play guitar, any quick fixes for shows and whatnot?

It seems to be becoming more of a problem as time goes on, my chrome tuneomatic bridge is starting to fade to copper and I’ve only had the guitar for about a year. Along with this my strings don’t last more than a week or two due to excessive playing and grim building up on the whole length of the E, B, G, and, D strings, along with A and E right where the strings touch the bridge, which I’m guessing is because of the constant moisture. Any answers to resolving this huge inconvenience will be much appreciated.

It’s lasted a year? Wow.
I’m serious about this response… people are now paying $1000+ premiums for “road worn” electric guitars. What you’re seeing is “road wear” – that’s exactly the process Fender, Gibson, and others are trying to duplicate. It’s inevitable and I wouldn’t try to stop it at all. You can’t stop your hands from sweating and that provides a natural lubricant when you’re playing. Plating on hardware doesn’t last – that’s the way it is, but if you want to make it stay shiny a little longer, you can use a layer or two of paste wax (auto wax works fine). Put it on in a thin layer, let it dry to a haze, and then buff it off.

Secondly – I’ve gigged for 35+ years- 5-6 nights a week in the 80’s. if you’re a working guitarist you’ll need to change your strings every couple of nights. Just buy them by the box (10 sets) and make it part of your pre-gig ritual. Every working guitarist has to do it. In-between changes clean them using “Finger-Ease” or similar on a clean cotton cloth (I used old baby diapers) – I twist the cloth around the string and wipe it end to end to get rid of the crud. Change every other night.

PS – I wanted to add — I have a 30 yr old G&L where I had to replace the all the bridge saddles after a couple years because they were _TOTALLY_ eaten away by perspiration. Nothing left of them.

Hope this helps — Rock on!
