How do I stop my 2 cats from spilling all of their water out of the bowl everyday?
Multiple times a day they put their paws in the small water bowl and knock it around or scratch at it until the dish slides and water spills out all over the floor. I switched from a ceramic cat bowl to a stainless steel bowl but that didn’t work. Next I tried a new stainless steel bowl with a rubber gripper around the bottom to prevent the sliding but they are still able to knock it around with their paws. I also tried moving the bowls to a new location but that always fails.
My cats never did that and I used a big and heavy human glass bowl for their water bowl. You do not have to stick to “pet” bowls. Any heavy human glass or ceramic bowl would do. But make sure it is not too high; the highest should be no more than their shoulder’s height. The problem with this is that the bowl is heavy to lift for cleaning and refill. For refills, I put the heavy bowl on the floor then fill it up with water. Now, because the bowl contains more water than they’ll drink before, you’ll need to change the water to prevent stale and rancid settlement. A heavy bowl with water gets heavier and if your are not Arnold Schwarzenegger you might have a hard time lifting that bowl, so do the reverse, scoop some water out before take off. I would also place a smaller bowl of water next to the big one just to provide a change and alternate option. Also, get a bowl that curves in at the bottom so their little paws could be tucked comfortable beneath them when they are drinking. It could be that they are just kicking the lower rim when they come up to drink. It’s like standing closely over a counter that has no toe space…. On an off beat chance, does the drinking area have ants or some insects, bugs, that could hide under the bowl that could cause the cats to act like cats and and wack or move the bowl so they could get at it/them? Finally, you could brace the bowl so that it cannot be moved. You’ve have to use your creative imagination to do this; if you think outside the box you might see other things not available to you when your were thinking inside it. Best of luck kitties will be cats and that’s why we love them.
