Bass Big
How big is considered a large california halibut?
My brother and myself went fishing last weekend and caught a couple CA halibut that were in the 25 to 28 inch range. So my question is what is considered a large CA halibut. For example catching a 10 pound bass is big. That sort of thing.
For me, a 20 pounder (38-40 inches plus) is big. By that measure I’ve caught nine big ones in 30+ years, out of something like 250-300 total keepers (22 inches plus) and probably a couple thousand shorts.
But then, it’s relative — they get bigger in some places than others (just like bass). My fish are mainly coastal southern Cal. fish; fish at the islands tend to be bigger, and I don’t know the sizes in other areas.
On the other hand, any halibut that’s big enough you don’t have to measure to keep is a nice fish.
